Just one book to report on this week:

The Brontes Went to Woolworths
, by Rachel Ferguson
This book came highly recommended by many fellow Virago collectors. For reasons I have yet to understand, it's considered quite collectible. I was lucky to have a dear friend snag it for me. Yea! Here's a description transcribed from the back cover:
"Lady Toddington said, "I saw the Brontes yesterday!... In Woolworths ... And Charlotte bought a hair-net. Mauve. Quite hideous, poor girl ... Emily had one of her difficult fits right in the middle of the haberdashery'"
The Carne girls - Deirdre, Katrine and Sheil - live with their mother and Sheil's governess. Deirdre is a journalist. She once declined a proposal of marriage, being in love with Sherlock Holmes at the time. Katrine is at Dramatic School, elocuting Shakespearian indecencies. They live like other middle-class London families before the First War, except that mealtimes are attended by a cloud of witnesses. There's Ironface the doll who converses in French ("Trrr-a! mes enfants!"); the pierrot Dion Saffyn; Pipson, a music-hall comic, and a ballet troupe, "The Kensington Palace Girls". And Judge Toddington, with his jam-tart yawn and small pomposities, is quite the most delectable thing. Then one day Deirdre goes to a charity bazaar, to be opened by none other than Lady Mildred, Toddy's real-life wife ... First published in 1931, this eccentric novel interlaces the reality and fantasy of the Carne household with an astringent, quirky humour.
