Mailbox Monday: August 10, 2009

I only received one book this week, but it came to me in an interesting way.  In a Sunday Salon post a couple of weeks ago, I mentioned I was in a rather long library queue for Olive Kitteridge.  The wonderful Bonnie from One More Page commented on my post and offered me her copy!  What a nice person.  I couldn't wait to start reading this Pulitzer winner and so far, it's absolutely wonderful.  Thanks Bonnie!

Thanks for the compliment Laura. Btw I just read your review of Unaccustomed Earth and see that I need to read that one soon. Who knows why it took me 10 years before I got to Interpreter of Maladies but probably because I've never been a huge fan of short stories. It seems like you just get into a short story and it's over. But I now will have to look at her second collection. I actually read her novel Namesake and didn't like it nearly as much as Interpreter.

Bonnie, yes I loved Unaccustomed Earth as well, and am sure you will enjoy it since you liked the first story collection so much. I agree her short stories are better than The Namesake -- I liked it too but not as much. The film is quite good and one of the few cases where I liked it more than the book. It made the characters and the emotions come to life.
