I'm in a big old house, somewhere in England, with a young woman named Catherine. We are shifting time periods a bit, going back in time to fill in details of Catherine's childhood. I know that she and her brother were abandoned by their parents, but the details are sketchy. They grew up living in their grandfather's house, with lots of family secrets. Not surprisingly, they have emotional scars. I suspect we are on a journey together to unlock secrets and heal wounds ... it's all rather melancholy at the moment, but in a good way, if that makes any sense. A Spell of Winter was the first winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction, in 1996.
